On the second floor of the Bayou Place building, directly across from the Wortham Center, the Alley Theatre and Jones Hall, The Ballroom at Bayou Place has operated in downtown Houston’s Theater District since 1997. The 15,000-square-foot main ballroom that opened nearly three decades ago now shares the building with Curtain Call, a more intimate first-floor space, and with a sister property, The Ballroom at Tanglewood, in the Galleria area. It’s built for hosts who want venue, catering, bar, furnishings and AV handled by one team instead of coordinating separate vendors.
What’s included
The main ballroom has floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-out balconies overlooking the Theater District, and the venue describes it as a “blank canvas” that gets transformed to match each event’s theme. Capacity claims vary depending on which page of the site you read: the FAQ cites seated receptions with a dance floor for 600 guests, or standing cocktail receptions for 1,000+; the floor plan page raises that to 700 seated; and general marketing copy mentions up to 1,600 guests across both floors. It’s worth confirming the exact number for your specific event format when you request a quote.
The all-inclusive approach covers in-house catering (outside caterers are allowed only with prior approval, for example to meet cultural or religious requirements), a full mixed-beverage liquor license with cash-bar or hosted-bar options, complimentary mahogany-toned chiavari chairs and tables with black or white cushions, in-house audio-visual equipment, and valet parking with access to the Theater District’s 4,000-space garage. The venue also partners with Kirksey Gregg Productions for floral, décor and rental needs, though it’s open to working with other licensed outside vendors.
For quinceañeras specifically, the site emphasizes experience with Latino traditions, a red-carpet-style entrance, and the ability to display photos and videos of the honoree on the venue’s screens during the party.
Pricing
The Ballroom at Bayou Place does not publish pricing on its own site — every event page (weddings, quinceañeras, services) directs you to “contact for tour & pricing.” The Knot lists a reference starting package of roughly $18,500, but that figure isn’t confirmed on the venue’s own pages and likely shifts based on date, guest count and which space you book (the full Bayou Place venue, Curtain Call alone, or Tanglewood). Treat it as a starting point for negotiation, not a fixed rate.
The FAQ page does spell out booking terms: securing a date requires a signed contract plus a non-refundable deposit equal to 100% of the venue rental. Accepted payment methods include cash, check, money order and cashier’s check, plus major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Amex) with a processing fee. Special holiday-weekend rates apply around Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas, July 4th, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Who it’s best for
This venue fits hosts planning a mid-to-large event (several hundred guests) who want a photogenic, centrally located space and prefer not to juggle separate vendors for room, food, bar and furnishings. Reviews are inconsistent across platforms: Google and Birdeye both show 4.5 out of 5 stars with 341 reviews, while WeddingWire shows just 2.6 out of 5 — though from only 5 reviews, too small a sample to draw firm conclusions from. It’s worth reading recent reviews across multiple platforms before deciding. If you’re planning something more intimate, Curtain Call (the first-floor space) may be a better fit than renting the full ballroom.
Before you book
- Get a full written quote: room rental, catering, bar, security and service charges. There’s no published per-person price, so don’t assume anything until you have numbers on paper.
- Confirm real capacity for your event format (seated with dance floor vs. standing cocktail) — figures range from 600 to 1,600 depending on which page of the site you check.
- Ask about their booking calendar: they open availability up to 18 months out, so if you want a peak-season date (summer, December) plan to book well ahead.
- Check whether your preferred caterer can work there: in-house catering is the default, and outside caterers need prior approval from the venue’s team.
- Tours are free but by appointment only — call (713) 400-1299 to schedule before showing up.
As always, pricing and policies change — confirm everything directly with the venue before signing a contract.
